PROJECT: Fabricating a Historic Sword Replica

Recently the Phoenix Consultants team conducted a site visit to the Museum of Gloucester as the first stage of a new, exciting project to create a replica of the Newnham Sword; a processional sword traditionally said to be one given by King John to the town of Newnham dating from the late 15th or early 16th centuries; and is currently stored in the museum.

Commissioned by and in collaboration with Thomas Penny on behalf of Newnham and the Newnham Community Library, this replica is intended to be displayed in Newnham for local residents, children, and history enthusiasts to view and engage with, as well as be a durable, hands-on model to show the sword without concern for the damaging the original.

In order to create a replica of the historic sword, Phoenix Consultants were granted permission to view, take reference photographs, and carefully take measurements to ensure the replica is an accurate representation of the sword while paying respect to its Gloucestershire heritage in Newnham.

The second stage of the project involved creating a 3D CAD model of the sword from the reference photos and measurements. Some aspects were adjusted to enable the sword to have a structural rod through the centre in order to increase the replica’s durability and longevity. The 3D CAD is then used to produce the physical replica through a combination of 3D printing additive manufacture and traditional hand modelmaking fabrication. Thomas Penny will then complete the final details of the Newnham Sword replica including painting and adding small details by hand, before presenting the replica in Newnham and unveiling for the public to see in the near future.
