RowElectric
Electricity Generator

Generating human powered, renewable, and sustainable energy through rowing.

About the project

Funded by an Innovate UK grant we are working with RowElectric to design and user test an exciting new energy generating exercise machine.

Row Electric is a retrofit product that simply replaces the fan component on a static rowing machine to convert the kinetic energy into usable electrical energy. This can then charge a portable battery or feed directly into a circuit in a domestic house or commercial gym. The system works much like a solar panel to supplement the energy consumption of the building reducing energy costs and the use of fossil fuels.

How much energy is generated?

The average rower at a steady pace of 2:00mins/500m will be able to produce about 140 watts of usable electrical power.  However, a top athlete who can row at a steady 1:40mins/500m will be generating around 250 Watts of usable electrical power. With a ban of these machines in a gym setting or rowing club large amounts of energy can be generated.

We have made every effort to make the technology as efficient as possible to capture as much energy as we can - as every bit counts!

User testing

We are conducting extensive user testing with potential users through SUS questionnaires, focus groups and one on one user testing. If you would like to be involved with this or would like to hear more get in touch!
